History Of The C-Class
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is luxury compact-level sedan first produced by Daimler AG in 1993 as a replacement for the Mercedes-Benz W201, the first compact executive car from Mercedes-Benz introduced in 1982. The C-Class is built in Sindelfingen and Bremen, Germany as well as many other satellite factories around the world. The first generation C-Class was produced on 1993 and the second generation was introduced in 2000.
Although the C-Class was first introduced as a sedan and station wagon, auto shoppers can find the fastback coupe version, which was manufactured in 2000, and now the C-Class Coupe. Regardless of which used C-Class you choose to own, you will not be disappointed with the performance, agility, and handling of the C-Class.
Appearance Over Time
The W202 or first generation Mercedes-Benz C class models features a sporty look and sharp lines. It was the company's entry level sedan up until 1997, when Mercedes-Benz introduced the A-Class. In 1996, the C-Class was given a mid-generation refresh with new darker tail lights, new rims, and interior trim changes. The exterior radio antenna was integrated into the rear glass, and the front and rear bumpers were reshaped. Some models were also fitted with a supercharger. Design of the next generation began in 1994 and testing began in 1997. The second generation C-Class, which debuted in March 2000 featured a wide range of engine options, more sleek and aerodynamic curves, and cabin upgrades.
The third generation was fist introduced in March 2007 in nearly all European countries. This new generation C-Class featured an extended wheelbase, stiff body shell, and design elements inspired by the S-Class and CLS-Class. It received a face lift for the 2012 model year, which included an upgraded dashboard and instrument cluster, front fascia and headlights, and new LED taillights. The fourth and current generation C-Class was launched in 2014 and it featured a significantly lighter body thanks to lighter aluminum and high strength steel parts. Four C-Class body styles are available: Sedan, Wagon, Coupe, and Cabriolet.
Mercedes-Benz has made tremendous progress when it comes to engines and mechanics, while always never settling for less. The first generation C-Class featured a 1.8 liter 120 horsepower engine, 2.0 liter 134 horsepower engine, and 2.2 liter 148 horsepower engine. Diesel models were also available in the 2.0 and 2.2 liter versions. In the last four years of its first generation, Mercedes-Benz introduced a 2.2L turbodiesel model, and larger petrol engines. Second generation models used a 1.8 liter engine that was smoother and more efficient than the 2.3 liter engines.
The third generation featured many engine options, including a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline-4, a 3.5-liter V6, and a 6.3-liter V8 in AMG® models which put out an astounding 451 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. Under the hood of the fourth generation C-Class you will find a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine that puts out 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. It is also available with a 3.0-liter twin turbocharged V6 that puts out 362 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque and a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 in AMG® models.
